Famous quotes containing the words statue of, statue and/or zeus:

The consolations of space are nameless things.
It was after the neurosis of winter. It was
In the genius of summer that they blew up
The statue of Jove among the boomy clouds.
It took all day to quieten the sky
And then to refill its emptiness again....
    Wallace Stevens (1879–1955)

The mind, in short, works on the data it receives very much as a sculptor works on his block of stone. In a sense the statue stood there from eternity. But there were a thousand different ones beside it, and the sculptor alone is to thank for having extricated this one from the rest.
    William James (1842–1910)

And Zeus will destroy this race of mortal men too, when they, at their birth, have grey hair on their temples.
    Hesiod (c. 8th century B.C.)
