This article or section may be slanted towards recent events. Please try to keep recent events in historical perspective.

In the 2000s, several plans for space exploration were announced; both government entities and the private sector have space exploration objectives. China has announced plans to have a 60-ton multi-module space station in orbit by 2020.

The NASA Authorization Act of 2010 provides objectives for American space exploration. NASA proposes to move forward with the development of the Space Launch System (SLS), which will be designed to carry the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle, as well as important cargo, equipment, and science experiments to Earth's orbit and destinations beyond. Additionally, the SLS will serve as a back up for commercial and international partner transportation services to the International Space Station. The SLS rocket will incorporate technological investments from the Space Shuttle program and the Constellation program in order to take advantage of proven hardware and reduce development and operations costs. The first developmental flight is targeted for the end of 2017.

Famous quotes containing the words future of, future, space and/or exploration:

    Such is the miraculous nature of the future of exiles: what is first uttered in the impotence of an overheated apartment becomes the fate of nations.
    Salman Rushdie (b. 1948)

    Although I’m trying very hard
    To sound unlike a birthday card,
    That’s all this is: so you may find it
    Full of all that lies behind it
    Admiration; friendship too;
    And hope that in the future you
    Reap ever richer revenue.
    Philip Larkin (1922–1986)

    The true gardener then brushes over the ground with slow and gentle hand, to liberate a space for breath round some favourite; but he is not thinking about destruction except incidentally. It is only the amateur like myself who becomes obsessed and rejoices with a sadistic pleasure in weeds that are big and bad enough to pull, and at last, almost forgetting the flowers altogether, turns into a Reformer.
    Freya Stark (1893–1993)

    I call her old. She has one family
    Whose claim is good to being settled here
    Before the era of colonization,
    And before that of exploration even.
