Southern Germany (German: Süddeutschland) is the region in the south of Germany. While there is no specific boundary, it usually includes all of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. Historically, this corresponds to the stem duchies of Swabia and Bavaria. The Saarland and the southern parts of Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate are also often included, corresponding to historical Franconia.

Famous quotes containing the words southern and/or germany:
“I sometimes wonder that we can be so frivolous ... as to attend to the gross but somewhat foreign form of servitude called Negro Slavery, there are so many keen and subtle masters that enslave both north and south. It is hard to have a southern overseer; it is worse to have a northern one; but worst of all when you are the slave-driver of yourself.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“It took six weeks of debate in the Senate to get the Arms Embargo Law repealedand we face other delays during the present session because most of the Members of the Congress are thinking in terms of next Autumns election. However, that is one of the prices that we who live in democracies have to pay. It is, however, worth paying, if all of us can avoid the type of government under which the unfortunate population of Germany and Russia must exist.”
—Franklin D. Roosevelt (18821945)
