Marriage and Family
On Christmas Day in 1829, Solomon Northup married Anne Hampton. She was also of mixed race, with African, European, and Native American ancestry. They had three children: Elizabeth, Margaret and Phillip. They owned their own farm in Hebron in Washington County. The parents worked at various jobs and thereby made a prosperous life for their family. Northup kept up with the violin, which he played well. Solomon Northup's descendant, the Northup family matriarch Victoria Northup Linzy Dunahm, died in California at the age of 98 in 2008. Other descendants live in various parts of the country, including Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Syracuse, New York.
