Chemical Reactions
In the laboratory, sodium nitrite can be used to destroy excess sodium azide.
- 2 NaN3 + 2 Na NO2 + 2 H+ → 3 N2 + 2 NO + 2 Na+ + 2 H2O
At high temperatures, sodium nitrite decomposes to sodium oxide, nitrogen(II) oxide and oxygen.

Famous quotes containing the words chemical and/or reactions:
“Ants are so much like human beings as to be an embarrassment. They farm fungi, raise aphids as livestock, launch armies into war, use chemical sprays to alarm and confuse enemies, capture slaves, engage in child labor, exchange information ceaselessly. They do everything but watch television.”
—Lewis Thomas (b. 1913)
“Separation anxiety is normal part of development, but individual reactions are partly explained by experience, that is, by how frequently children have been left in the care of others.... A mother who is never apart from her young child may be saying to him or her subliminally: You are only safe when Im with you.”
—Cathy Rindner Tempelsman (20th century)
