Social Security Number

In the United States, a Social Security number (SSN) is a nine-digit number issued to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and temporary (working) residents under section 205(c)(2) of the Social Security Act, codified as 42 U.S.C. ยง 405(c)(2). The number is issued to an individual by the Social Security Administration, an independent agency of the United States government. Its primary purpose is to track individuals for Social Security purposes.

A Social Security number may be obtained by applying on Form SS-5, "Application for A Social Security Number Card".

Over time, the number has been used for more diverse purposes than simply taxes, essentially making it a de facto national identification number.

Famous quotes containing the words social, security and/or number:

A man is a beggar who only lives to the useful, and, however he may serve as a pin or rivet in the social machine, cannot be said to have arrived at self-possession.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

... most Southerners of my parents’ era were raised to feel that it wasn’t respectable to be rich. We felt that all patriotic Southerners had lost everything in defense of the South, and sufficient time hadn’t elapsed for respectable rebuilding of financial security in a war- impoverished region.
Sarah Patton Boyle, U.S. civil rights activist and author. The Desegregated Heart, part 1, ch. 1 (1962)

The best number for a dinner party is two—myself and a dam’ good head waiter.
    Nubar Gulbenkian (1896–1972)
