Soap Film - Drainage of A Soap Film

Drainage of A Soap Film

If surfactants are well chosen and the atmosphere is controlled (humidity, air movements...) a horizontal soap film can last quite a long time (between minutes and hours). On the contrary, a vertical soap film is affected by gravity and so the liquid tends to drain, causing the soap film to thin at the top. Since the colour depends on the thickness; it accounts for the interference fringes that can be seen at the top of figure 4.

Famous quotes containing the words soap and/or film:

Commercial jazz, soap opera, pulp fiction, comic strips, the movies set the images, mannerisms, standards, and aims of the urban masses. In one way or another, everyone is equal before these cultural machines; like technology itself, the mass media are nearly universal in their incidence and appeal. They are a kind of common denominator, a kind of scheme for pre-scheduled, mass emotions.
    C. Wright Mills (1916–62)
