Public Domain Slash
One recent development appears to be "public domain" slash, which occurs when two same-sex "classical" literary characters are thrown together in unexpected lesbian and gay relationships. Ann Herendeen seems to have pioneered this genre, with her recent Pride/Prejudice (2010). This work postulates that both Fitzwilliam Darcy and Charles Bingley, and Elizabeth Bennett and Charlotte Lucas were lovers of the same sex, and therefore closet bisexuals.

Famous quotes containing the words public and/or domain:
“The rumor of a great city goes out beyond its borders, to all the latitudes of the known earth. The city becomes an emblem in remote minds; apart from the tangible export of goods and men, it exerts its cultural instrumentality in a thousand phases.”
—In New York City, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)
“Without metaphor the handling of general concepts such as culture and civilization becomes impossible, and that of disease and disorder is the obvious one for the case in point. Is not crisis itself a concept we owe to Hippocrates? In the social and cultural domain no metaphor is more apt than the pathological one.”
—Johan Huizinga (18721945)
