Sibutu Passage

Sibutu Passage Coordinates: 4°50′N 119°35′E / 4.833°N 119.583°E / 4.833; 119.583 is a safe and deep channel some 18 miles (29 km) wide that separates Borneo from the Sulu Archipelago. It has a deep sill allowing entry of deep water into the Sulu basin while connecting the Sulu Sea with the Sulawesi Sea that feeds from the Pacific Ocean by the Mindanao Current.

At the last glacial maximum it was one of only two entrances to the Sulu Sea, along with Mindoro Strait, while the Sulu Islands and most of the other Philippine Islands were one connected island.

Famous quotes containing the word passage:

I envy neither the heart nor the head of any legislator who has been born to an inheritance of privileges, who has behind him ages of education, dominion, civilization, and Christianity, if he stands opposed to the passage of a national education bill, whose purpose is to secure education to the children of those who were born under the shadow of institutions which made it a crime to read.
    Frances Ellen Watkins Harper (1825–1911)
