Subdivisions

The Shan people can be divided into five major groups:

1. The Tai Yai (တႆးယႂ်ႇ) or "Shan Proper"
2. The Tai Lue (တႆးလိုဝ်ႉ), located in Xishuangbanna (China) and the eastern states
3. The Tai Khuen (တႆးၶိုၼ်), the majority of Keng Tung
4. The Tai Neua (တႆးၼိူဝ်), mostly in Dehong (China)
5. The Tai Khamti, mostly in Assam and Manipur
