Sedna (mythology) - Role in Beliefs

Role in Beliefs

The varying legends each give different rationales for Sedna's death. In each version, the father takes her to sea in his kayak, severing her fingers and hands. And in each version, she falls to the bottom of the sea and becomes its goddess, worshiped by hunters who depended on her goodwill to supply food. Generally considered a vengeful goddess, hunters must placate and pray to Sedna to release the sea animals from the oceans depths for their hunt.

Famous quotes containing the words role in, role and/or beliefs:

My role in society, or any artist or poet’s role, is to try and express what we all feel. Not to tell people how to feel. Not as a preacher, not as a leader, but as a reflection of us all.
    John Lennon (1940–1980)

The role of the writer is not simply to arrange Being according to his own lights; he must also serve as a medium to Being and remain open to its often unfathomable dictates. This is the only way the work can transcend its creator and radiate its meaning further than the author himself can see or perceive.
    Václav Havel (b. 1936)

Both Eliot and Pound condense; their best verse is weighted—Pound’s, with sensual experience primarily, and Eliot’s with beliefs. Where the mind’s life is concerned the senses produce images, and beliefs produce dramatic cries. The condensation is important.
    R.P. Blackmur (1904–1965)
