Scott Norwood - Popular Culture

Popular Culture

Scott Norwood's famous Super Bowl field goal miss partly inspired the character "Ray Finkle" in the movie Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.

The character "Scott Woods" in the movie Buffalo '66 is a spin off of Norwood. Character Billy Brown (Vincent Gallo) loses a large bet in the 1991 Super Bowl XXV because of the missed field goal kick by the Buffalo Bills team kicker "Scott Woods". The character is played by Bob Wahl.

Norwood's infamous field goal miss is the pretext for Buffalo/upstate New York band Mercury Rev's instrumental tune 'Nocturne for Norwood', from their 2008 album Strange Attractor, in which broadcast commentary is juxtaposed with ambient music.

Famous quotes containing the words popular culture, popular and/or culture:

Popular culture entered my life as Shirley Temple, who was exactly my age and wrote a letter in the newspapers telling how her mother fixed spinach for her, with lots of butter.... I was impressed by Shirley Temple as a little girl my age who had power: she could write a piece for the newspapers and have it printed in her own handwriting.
    Adrienne Rich (b. 1929)

People try so hard to believe in leaders now, pitifully hard. But we no sooner get a popular reformer or politician or soldier or writer or philosopher—a Roosevelt, a Tolstoy, a Wood, a Shaw, a Nietzsche, than the cross-currents of criticism wash him away. My Lord, no man can stand prominence these days. It’s the surest path to obscurity. People get sick of hearing the same name over and over.
    F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896–1940)

Here is this vast, savage, howling mother of ours, Nature, lying all around, with such beauty, and such affection for her children, as the leopard; and yet we are so early weaned from her breast to society, to that culture which is exclusively an interaction of man on man,—a sort of breeding in and in, which produces at most a merely English nobility, a civilization destined to have a speedy limit.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
