The Whitman Years
In 1837 Narcissa Whitman, aged 29, gave birth to a baby girl, Alice Clarissa. Two years later, she was distracted for a moment and little Alice drowned in the nearby Walla Walla River. She suffered deeply from this loss. In an attempt to regain some sense of family she began taking care of other children. Soon four children were in their custody, including the daughters of mountain men Joseph Meek and Jim Bridger.
In early October 1844, the Independent Colony reached the Whitman Mission, and the Sagers found a new home with Narcissa. In July 1845 Marcus obtained a court order giving him legal custody of the children. The Sager orphans had new parents.

Famous quotes containing the words whitman and/or years:
“You have waited, you always wait, you dumb, beautiful ministers,
We receive you with free sense at last, and are insatiate
hence-forward,
Not you any more shall be able to foil us, or withhold yourselves
from us,
We use you, and do not cast you asidewe plant you permanently within us,
We fathom you notwe love youthere is perfection in you also,
You furnish your parts, toward eternity,
Great or small, you furnish your parts toward the soul.”
—Walt Whitman (18191892)
“Finishing schools in the fifties were a good place to store girls for a few years before marrying them off, a satisfactory rest stop between college weekends spent husband hunting. It was a haven for those of us adept at styling each others hair, playing canasta, and chain smoking Pall Mall extra-long cigarettes.”
—Barbara Howar (b. 1934)
