Proposals To Repeal or Modify

The Succession to the Crown Bill, a private member's bill, presented to the British Parliament on 9 December 2004, would have repealed this act in its entirety. However, the Bill was withdrawn 15 January 2005 by its sponsor after being told that it would not receive government support.

In October 2011 David Cameron wrote to the leaders of the Commonwealth Realms proposing that the act be limited to the first six people in line to the throne. The leaders approved the proposed change at a summit in Australia.

Famous quotes containing the words proposals, repeal and/or modify:

One theme links together these new proposals for family policy—the idea that the family is exceedingly durable. Changes in structure and function and individual roles are not to be confused with the collapse of the family. Families remain more important in the lives of children than other institutions. Family ties are stronger and more vital than many of us imagine in the perennial atmosphere of crisis surrounding the subject.
    Joseph Featherstone (20th century)

Slavery is founded in the selfishness of man’s nature—opposition to it, is [in?] his love of justice.... It still will be the abundance of man’s heart, that slavery extension is wrong; and out of the abundance of his heart, his mouth will continue to speak.
    Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865)

Life is measured by the rapidity of change, the succession of influences that modify the being.
George Eliot [Mary Ann (or Marian)
