The RHA Today
There are currently four separate regiments that wear the cypher (cap badge) of the RHA:
- The King's Troop, Royal Horse Artillery (primarily a ceremonial unit which uses vintage 13-pounder guns for firing salutes)
- 1st Regiment Royal Horse Artillery (The South Yorks and Midland Gunners)
- 3rd Regiment Royal Horse Artillery (The Liverpool and Manchester Gunners)
- 7th Parachute Regiment Royal Horse Artillery – this was formed in 1962 from the 33rd Parachute Field Regiment Royal Artillery and served until 1977 as the artillery regiment of 16th Independent Parachute Brigade Group. After a spell in Germany as a non-airborne unit, it returned to Aldershot where it joined 5th Airborne Brigade and once again assumed the airmobile role. It is currently part of 16 Air Assault Brigade based in Colchester, armed with the L118 105-mm light gun which is air-droppable from the C-130 Hercules.
The Royal Horse Artillery has provided the Queen's Guard on three occasions:
- 1 RHA – January 1979
- 7 Para RHA – March 1989
- King's Troop – April 2007
The King's Troop provides the Queen's Life Guard in Whitehall for three weeks in August each year while the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment goes away for summer training.

Famous quotes containing the word today:
“Indeed, the best books have a use, like sticks and stones, which is above or beside their design, not anticipated in the preface, not concluded in the appendix. Even Virgils poetry serves a very different use to me today from what it did to his contemporaries. It has often an acquired and accidental value merely, proving that man is still man in the world.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
