Importance
Root hairs form an important surface over which plants absorb most of their water and nutrients. They are also directly involved in the formation of root nodules in legume plants
They have a large surface area, this makes absorbing both water and minerals more efficient using osmosis. Also, root hair cells secrete acid (H+ from malic acid) which exchanges and helps solubilize the minerals into ionic form, making the ions easier to take up.

Famous quotes containing the word importance:
“When we can begin to take our failures nonseriously, it means we are ceasing to be afraid of them. It is of immense importance to learn to laugh at ourselves.”
—Katherine Mansfield (18881923)
“Whoever deliberately attempts to insure confidentiality with another person is usually in doubt as to whether he inspires that persons confidence in him. One who is sure that he inspires confidence attaches little importance to confidentiality.”
—Friedrich Nietzsche (18441900)
“Never before has a generation of parents faced such awesome competition with the mass media for their childrens attention. While parents tout the virtues of premarital virginity, drug-free living, nonviolent resolution of social conflict, or character over physical appearance, their values are daily challenged by television soaps, rock music lyrics, tabloid headlines, and movie scenes extolling the importance of physical appearance and conformity.”
—Marianne E. Neifert (20th century)
