Romulus and Remus - Alleged Dates

Alleged Dates

Plutarch says that Romulus was 53 ("in the fifty-fourth year of his age") at his death (Plutarch says that he vanished) in 717 BC. If true, then Romulus and Remus would have been born in the year 771 BC, and have begun the founding of Rome at the age of 18. Dionysius of Halicarnassus says, however, that Romulus was 55 when he died and that he reigned for a total of 37 years, agreeing as he notes with others before him that Romulus began his reign at 18.

Famous quotes containing the words alleged and/or dates:

Most observers of the French Revolution, especially the clever and noble ones, have explained it as a life-threatening and contagious illness. They have remained standing with the symptoms and have interpreted these in manifold and contrary ways. Some have regarded it as a merely local ill. The most ingenious opponents have pressed for castration. They well noticed that this alleged illness is nothing other than the crisis of beginning puberty.
    Novalis [Friedrich Von Hardenberg] (1772–1801)

What is most interesting and valuable in it, however, is not the materials for the history of Pontiac, or Braddock, or the Northwest, which it furnishes; not the annals of the country, but the natural facts, or perennials, which are ever without date. When out of history the truth shall be extracted, it will have shed its dates like withered leaves.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
