Alexander was first elected to Congress in 2002 as a Democrat. On August 4, 2004, he registered to run as a Democrat, but changed his mind to become a Republican only 30 minutes before the filing deadline to prevent other Democrats from running. He then defeated fellow Republican Jock Scott of Alexandria in the open primary that November. In 2006, he defeated the Democrat Gloria Williams Hearn, wife of the psychologist George E. Famous quotes containing the words political and/or campaigns:
“History suggests that capitalism is a necessary condition for political freedom. Clearly it is not a sufficient condition.”
—Milton Friedman (b. 1912)
“That food has always been, and will continue to be, the basis for one of our greater snobbisms does not explain the fact that the attitude toward the food choice of others is becoming more and more heatedly exclusive until it may well turn into one of those forms of bigotry against which gallant little committees are constantly planning campaigns in the cause of justice and decency.”
—Cornelia Otis Skinner (19011979)
