Robert Surcouf - French Revolution

French Revolution

In 1792 he came back to Saint-Malo and discovered the political changes France had undergone in the wake of the French Revolution. He sailed to Isle de France (present-day Mauritius) in August on a commercial brig, and was informed on his arrival of the outbreak of war against Britain. Surcouf served as first officer of the 40-gun frigate Cybèle during the Action of 22 October 1794.

Famous quotes containing the words french and/or revolution:

The German intellect wants the French sprightliness, the fine practical understanding of the English, and the American adventure; but it has a certain probity, which never rests in a superficial performance, but asks steadily, To what end? A German public asks for a controlling sincerity.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

“I suppose with the French Revolution for a father and the Russian Revolution for a mother, you can very well dispense with a family,” he observed.
    Doris Lessing (b. 1919)
