Robert Blake (admiral) - On Land

On Land

After joining the New Model Army as a Captain in Alexander Popham's regiment, Blake distinguished himself at the Siege of Bristol (July 1643) and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. After his leading role in holding Lyme Regis in the Siege of Lyme (April 1644) he was promoted to colonel. He went on to hold the Parliamentary enclave of Taunton during the Siege of Taunton (1645), which earned him national recognition and where he famously declared that he would eat three of his four pairs of boots before he would surrender. He subsequently succeeded in winning the Siege of Dunster (November 1645).

The land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it.

All over this land women have no political existence. Laws pass over our heads that we can not unmake. Our property is taken from us without our consent. The babes we bear in anguish and carry in our arms are not ours.
