RMS Lancastria

RMS Lancastria

RMS Lancastria (later HMT Lancastria) was a British Cunard liner commandeered by the government for war, sunk on 17 June 1940 during World War II with the loss of over 4,000 lives, possibly many more. It is the worst ever loss of life in the sinking of a single British ship, and the bloodiest single engagement for UK forces (in terms of lives lost) in the whole of World War Two, and claimed more lives than the combined losses of the Titanic and Lusitania.
