Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport - Visits By NASA Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA)

Visits By NASA Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA)

On July 1, 2007, the Space Shuttle Atlantis made a stop at the airport while being piggybacked from Edwards Air Force Base to Florida—one of the few visits by the shuttle to a commercial airport. After a brief stay it was flown on to Offutt Air Force Base.

In 2009, the airport was again used as a refueling stop by the SCA. On September 20, the Space Shuttle Discovery was transported from Edwards Air Force Base to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida with intermediate stops in Amarillo, Carswell AFB in Ft.Worth, and Barksdale AFB in Louisiana.

Famous quotes containing the words visits, nasa, shuttle and/or carrier:

At La Scala it is customary to take no more than twenty minutes for those little visits one pays to boxes.
    Stendhal [Marie Henri Beyle] (1783–1842)

If we did not have such a thing as an airplane today, we would probably create something the size of NASA to make one.
    H. Ross Perot (b. 1930)

And the shuttle never falters, but to draw an encouraging conclusion
From this would be considerable, too odd. Why not just
Breathe in with the courage of each day, recognizing yourself as one
Who must with difficulty get down from high places?
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)

We know what the animals do, what are the needs of the beaver, the bear, the salmon, and other creatures, because long ago men married them and acquired this knowledge from their animal wives. Today the priests say we lie, but we know better.
native American belief, quoted by D. Jenness in “The Carrier Indians of the Bulkley River,” Bulletin no. 133, Bureau of American Ethnology (1943)
