Regions of New Zealand

The region is the top tier of local government in New Zealand. There are 16 regions of New Zealand. Eleven are governed by an elected regional council, while five are governed by territorial authorities (the second tier of local government) which also perform the functions of a regional council and thus are known as unitary authorities. The Chatham Islands Council is similar to a unitary authority, but is authorised under its own enabling legislation.

Famous quotes containing the words regions of, regions and/or zealand:

    Within the regions of the air,
    Compassed about with heavens fair,
    Great tracts of land there may be found
    Enriched with fields and fertile ground;
    Where many numerous hosts
    In those far distant coasts,
    For other great and glorious ends,
    Inhabit, my yet unknown friends.
    Thomas Traherne (1636–1674)

    We have wasted our spirit in the regions of the abstract and general just as the monks let it wither in the world of prayer and contemplation.
    Alexander Herzen (1812–1870)

    Teasing is universal. Anthropologists have found the same fundamental patterns of teasing among New Zealand aborigine children and inner-city kids on the playgrounds of Philadelphia.
    Lawrence Kutner (20th century)
