The region is governed by a group known as York Regional Council, which consists of 20 elected representatives from each of the constituent towns and cities in the region, including each of the nine mayors and 11 regional councillors, who are elected from the constituent municipalities as follows:

The leader of Council is referred to as "Regional Chair and CEO". Bill Fisch currently holds this office.

Famous quotes containing the word government:
“... until both employers and workers groups assume responsibility for chastising their own recalcitrant children, they can vainly bay the moon about ignorant and unfair public criticism. —Mary Barnett Gilson (1877?)
“A little group of wilful men reflecting no opinion but their own have rendered the great Government of the United States helpless and contemptible.”
—Woodrow Wilson (18561924)
“In general, the art of government consists in taking as much money as possible from one party of the citizens to give to the other.”
—Voltaire [François Marie Arouet] (16941778)
