Rail Transport in Norway - Railway Links With Adjacent Countries

Railway Links With Adjacent Countries

Sweden is the only country with which Norway shares railway borders. Sweden and Norway share gauge, loading gauge, signaling system, electric system, GSM-R and automatic trains stop systems. There are four border crossings: the Østfold Line–Norway/Vänern Line, the Kongsvinger Line–Värmland Line, the Meråker Line–Central Line and the Ofoten Line–Iron Ore Line. All crossings have electric traction on the Swedish side, but the Meråker Line lacks it on the Norwegian side. There have previously been operational train ferries to Denmark.

There are proposals to connect Northern Norway to Finland and Russia. At Kirkenes, the Kirkenes–Bjørnevatn Line is proposed to be connected to Russia's Murmansk–Nikel Railway, and the line is also proposed for connection to the Finnish network in Rovaniemi and Kolari. An alternative to this would be to build a line from Kolari to Skibotn and Tromsø.

Famous quotes containing the words railway, links and/or countries:

Her personality had an architectonic quality; I think of her when I see some of the great London railway termini, especially St. Pancras, with its soot and turrets, and she overshadowed her own daughters, whom she did not understand—my mother, who liked things to be nice; my dotty aunt. But my mother had not the strength to put even some physical distance between them, let alone keep the old monster at emotional arm’s length.
    Angela Carter (1940–1992)

I’ve gradually risen from lower-class background to lower-class foreground.
Marvin Cohen, U.S. author and humorist. Baseball the Beautiful, Links Books (1970)

We are the sons and daughters of the world they saved. [Now is our moment] to make common cause with other countries to ensure a world of peace and prosperity for yet another generation.
    Bill Clinton (b. 1946)
