R46 (New York City Subway Car)

The R46 is a New York City Subway car that operates on the IND and BMT routes of the New York City Subway. They were built by Pullman Standard in Chicago, Illinois in 1975–78. These cars, as well as the previous R44 were 75 feet (22.86 m) long. While most R44s had Westinghouse propulsion, the R46 had General Electric propulsion.

The R46 order was 754 single cars, numbered from 500-1278. Even cars with cabs are A cars, odd cars (without cabs) are B cars. The fleet had various problems dating back to delivery. In 1989-92, Morrison-Knudsen of Hornell, New York rebuilt 752 of the cars. The other two (1054 and 941) had been scrapped after an accident at Jamaica – 179th Street on June 4, 1987. After rebuilding, the R46s were renumbered to 5482-6258, equipped with LCD side signs, lost their MTA blue stripe paint-scheme, and arranged in linked sets of four.

Famous quotes containing the words york, city and/or subway:

The energy, the brutality, the scale, the contrast, the tension, the rapid change—and the permanent congestion—are what the New Yorker misses when he leaves the city.
—In New York City, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)

No one would know except for ancient maps
That such a brook ran water. But I wonder
If from its being kept forever under,
The thoughts may not have risen that so keep
This new-built city from both work and sleep.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)

In New York—whose subway trains in particular have been “tattooed” with a brio and an energy to put our own rude practitioners to shame—not an inch of free space is spared except that of advertisements.... Even the most chronically dispossessed appear prepared to endorse the legitimacy of the “haves.”
Gilbert Adair, British author, critic. “Cleaning and Cleansing,” Myths and Memories (1986)
