Incidents
On May 11 of 2011, two students were charged with bringing a weapon to school after being caught passing a pellet gun between them while entering Quincy High School. This was one of the first incidents of its kind in the new school.
Two students were arrested at noon after a resource officer who works in the school spotted them passing what appeared to be a gun back and forth while they were entering the school.
They were charged with disturbing school assembly and possession of a weapon on campus grounds. The principal then quickly expelled both of the students, and they will not get diplomas.
Minutes after arresting both students, police were called back to the school to check out an inert hand grenade that a student brought to class for a project. The grenade had long ago been disabled and was no longer dangerous, police said. The student had brought it to school as part of a class project and his teacher confiscated it.
The school was under lockdown and handled the situation while causing a huge panic within the school. Students thought it was an actual gun and not a BB gun. Also, students at the time did not know that the grenade was harmless.

“An element of exaggeration clings to the popular judgment: great vices are made greater, great virtues greater also; interesting incidents are made more interesting, softer legends more soft.”
