Quileute Language - Morphology

Morphology

Quileute features an interesting prefix system that changes depending on the physical characteristics of the person being spoken to. When speaking to a cross-eyed person, the prefix /tḁ-/ is placed at the beginning of each word. When speaking to a hunchback, the prefix /ʧʔ/ is used. Additional prefixes are also used for short men (/s-/), funny people (/tl̥/), and people that have difficulty walking (/ʧχ/).

Famous quotes containing the word morphology:

I ascribe a basic importance to the phenomenon of language.... To speak means to be in a position to use a certain syntax, to grasp the morphology of this or that language, but it means above all to assume a culture, to support the weight of a civilization.
    Frantz Fanon (1925–1961)
