A Quarter pipe is a ramp used in extreme sports which resembles a quarter of the cross section of a pipe. They are most commonly found in skateparks and a skiing/snowboarding terrain park, although the trained eye of an extreme sports fan can find them in modern day architecture. It has a progressively steepening transition, which begins at the ground, and ends at a metal rail or plastic piping called the coping. Riders/skaters may use the ramp to launch themselves into the air, landing back on the ramp transition, or to 'stall' or 'grind' on the coping.
Two quarter pipes can be placed opposite to each other to form a half pipe, or they can be placed back-to-back (with no platform between the two lines of coping) to form a spine ramp.
Famous quotes containing the words quarter and/or pipe:
“The most winning woman I ever knew was hanged for poisoning three little children for their insurance-money, and the most repellent man of my acquaintance is a philanthropist who has spent nearly a quarter of a million upon the London poor.”
—Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (18591930)
“It is not that the Englishman cant feelit is that he is afraid to feel. He has been taught at his public school that feeling is bad form. He must not express great joy or sorrow, or even open his mouth too wide when he talkshis pipe might fall out if he did.”
—E.M. (Edward Morgan)
