Quarff Primary School

Quarff Primary School, Shetland, Scotland, was a primary school that provided education for the district around Quarff from 1879 to 2003.

It was established in 1879 with an advertisement in the Glasgow Herald: "... for Quarff New Public School, a Female Teacher (or ex-Pupil Teacher of either sex), to enter immediately. The school has accommodation for about 40 scholars ..."

The school provided primary education for over 120 years, but was closed in 2003 due to a lack of interest in the position of headmaster. The 17 students at the school were moved to Cunningsburgh School, where their former headmistress was working. Fortunately, the students were able to stay together in the same school.

The building is now shown as a library on the Ordnance Survey map.

Famous quotes containing the words primary and/or school:

    One of the effects of a safe and civilised life is an immense oversensitiveness which makes all the primary emotions somewhat disgusting. Generosity is as painful as meanness, gratitude as hateful as ingratitude.
    George Orwell (1903–1950)

    Mary had a little lamb,
    Its fleece was white as snow,
    And every where that Mary went
    The lamb was sure to go;
    He followed her to school one day—
    That was against the rule,
    It made the children laugh and play,
    To see a lamb at school.
    Sarah Josepha Buell Hale (1788–1879)
