Qiu Ben was a military general of Cao Wei during the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history. He followed general Deng Ai in the campaign to conquer the rival state of Shu Han. Their army arrived at Mianzhu Pass, which was on the way to Shu Han's capital Chengdu. During the battle, Qiu urged the enemy general Zhuge Zhan to surrender, but Zhuge refused. Qiu suggested a surprise attack to overwhelm the Shu Han forces and achieved success, with Zhuge Zhan and his son Zhuge Shang both killed in action.

“Ye knowe eek, that in forme of speche is chaunge
Withinne a thousand yeer, and wordes tho
That hadden prys, now wonder nyce and straunge

And spedde as wel in love as men now do;
