Medical Uses
These drugs are utilized in the treatment of many conditions such as:
- Dyspepsia
- Peptic ulcer disease (PUD)
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Laryngopharyngeal reflux
- Barrett's esophagus
- prevention of stress gastritis
- Gastrinomas and other conditions that cause hypersecretion of acid
- Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
Specialty professional organizations recommend that people take the lowest effective dose possible to achieve the desired therapeutic result when using proton pump inhibitors to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease long-term. The FDA advises that no more than three 14-day treatment courses should be used in one year.
The effectiveness of proton pump inhibitors has not been demonstrated in every case, despite their widespread use for these conditions. For example, proton pump inhibitors do not change the length of Barrett's esophagus. The most objective test to assess success of PPI therapy in patients with GERD is esophageal pH monitoring.

Famous quotes containing the word medical:
“If science ever gets to the bottom of Voodoo in Haiti and Africa, it will be found that some important medical secrets, still unknown to medical science, give it its power, rather than the gestures of ceremony.”
—Zora Neale Hurston (18911960)
“As we speak of poetical beauty, so ought we to speak of mathematical beauty and medical beauty. But we do not do so; and that reason is that we know well what is the object of mathematics, and that it consists in proofs, and what is the object of medicine, and that it consists in healing. But we do not know in what grace consists, which is the object of poetry.”
—Blaise Pascal (16231662)
