Proton-pump Inhibitor - Adverse Effects

Adverse Effects

Proton pump inhibitors (as well as other antacid preparations), by suppressing acid-mediated breakdown of proteins, lead to an elevated risk of developing food allergies. These undigested proteins then pass into the gastrointestinal tract potentially leading to sensitization to a range of foods or drugs. It is unclear whether this risk occurs with only long-term use or with short-term use as well.

Famous quotes containing the words adverse and/or effects:

[Religious establishment] is adverse to the diffusion of the light of Christianity ... [because] with an ignoble and unchristian timidity it would [be] circumscribed, with a wall of defence, against the encroachments of error.
    James Madison (1751–1836)

The machines that are first invented to perform any particular movement are always the most complex, and succeeding artists generally discover that, with fewer wheels, with fewer principles of motion, than had originally been employed, the same effects may be more easily produced. The first systems, in the same manner, are always the most complex.
    Adam Smith (1723–1790)
