In addition to the unification of Nepal, King Prithivi Narayan Shah laid out the guiding principles of governance, nationalism, and foreign policy. In his Divya Upadesh King Prithivi Narayan Shah laid out 9 principles that formed the core of Nepali political and national life. For example, his observation that Nepal is a yam between two big rocks (referring to two huge countries China and India that surround Nepal) and that Nepal should take into consideration the strength (military) of her neighbors and endeavour to use diplomacy and soft power in her foreign relation informed Nepal's foreign policy since. In the Divya Upadesh, he also asks his successors to be wary of the English and to be friendly to the Chinese.
