Duties Within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) effectively discontinued the office of Presiding Patriarch in 1979, without publishing any known revelation to that effect. Until that time, the role and duties of the office had varied. The Presiding Patriarch sometime appointed local patriarchs in the stakes of the Church and presided over them as a loose "Quorum of Patriarchs." Like the local Patriarchs, the Presiding Patriarch was also empowered to give patriarchal blessings.

Famous quotes containing the words duties, church, jesus, christ and/or saints:

So didst thou travel on life’s common way,
In cheerful godliness; and yet thy heart
The lowliest duties on herself did lay.
    William Wordsworth (1770–1850)

You don’t decide to build a church because you have money in the bank. You build because God says this is what I should do. Faith is the supplier of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen.
    Jim Bakker (b. 1940)

We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies.
Bible: New Testament, 2 Corinthians 4:8-10.

“English! they are barbarians; they don’t believe in the great God.” I told him, “Excuse me, Sir. We do believe in God, and in Jesus Christ too.” “Um,” says he, “and in the Pope?” “No.” “And why?” This was a puzzling question in these circumstances.... I thought I would try a method of my own, and very gravely replied, “Because we are too far off.” A very new argument against the universal infallibility of the Pope.
    James Boswell (1740–1795)

O cunning enemy, that to catch a saint,
With saints doth bait thy hook! Most dangerous
Is that temptation that doth goad us on
    To sin in loving virtue.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)
