Cale and The Origin of The Name of Galicia

The origin of the name "Galiza" (Calecia, Gallaecia) may be found in the root Cale, which also appears in words like kallaikoí or galaicos. Many scholars believe that the origins of the name "Galaicos" was in the area around the mouth of the Douro river and the Romans then used this name to refer to all the Celtic-speaking Castro people of the Iberian Peninsula's north west, an area they named Gallaecia.

Famous quotes containing the words cale and/or origin:

I like it here in New York. I like the idea of having to keep eyes in the back of your head all the time.
    —John Cale (b. 1940)

Someone had literally run to earth
In an old cellar hole in a byroad
The origin of all the family there.
Thence they were sprung, so numerous a tribe
That now not all the houses left in town
Made shift to shelter them without the help
Of here and there a tent in grove and orchard.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)
