Pitch Pipe - Modern Pitch Pipes

Modern Pitch Pipes

Although few look like a pipe, the pitch pipe name is still applied to any device used as a pitch reference. The most common type is a circular free reed aerophone. These are discs with the holes for the reeds around the perimeter and with marked openings for each note, into which the user blows. Inside the pipe, the air flows through a hole in a plate past the selected rectangular metal reed (usually brass). The airflow is modulated by the oscillating reed, then it resonates in an outer sounding chamber. In recent years, electronic pushbutton devices simulating chromatic pitch pipes have become available which are small enough to fit on key chains.

Famous quotes containing the words modern, pitch and/or pipes:

    The modern nose, like the modern eye, has developed a sort of microscopic, intercellular intensity which makes our human contacts painful and revolting.
    Marshall McLuhan (1911–1980)

    It is beyond a doubt that during the sixteenth century, and the years immediately preceding and following it, poisoning had been brought to a pitch of perfection which remains unknown to modern chemistry, but which is indisputably proved by history. Italy, the cradle of modern science, was at that time, the inventor and mistress of these secrets, many of which are lost.
    HonorĂ© De Balzac (1799–1850)

    Because the Muses never knew their pains.
    They boast their peasants’ pipes, but peasants now
    Resign their pipes and plod behind the plough;
    George Crabbe (1754–1832)
