Piet Hein Tunnel

The Piet Hein Tunnel (52°22′23″N 4°56′51″E / 52.3729624°N 4.947633°E / 52.3729624; 4.947633) is a 1.9 km long tunnel under an inlet of the IJsselmeer in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. It provides a road link running east-west between the city center and the A10 ring-road, and since May 2005 also provides a tram link between the Amsterdam Centraal railway station and Haveneiland, IJburg. Completed in 1997, the tunnel, approaches and related buildings were designed by the hypermodernist Dutch architectural firm Van Berkel + Bos, and was named after the Dutch naval hero Piet Hein.

Famous quotes containing the words hein and/or tunnel:

The road to wisdom?—Well, it’s plain
    and simple to express:
    Err
    and err
    and err again
    but less
    and less
    and less.
    —Piet Hein (b. 1905)

    It is the light
At the end of the tunnel as it might be seen
By him looking out somberly at the shower,
The picture of hope a dying man might turn away from,
Realizing that hope is something else, something concrete
    You can’t have.
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)
