Personal Life
Philip Rivers married his junior high school sweetheart, Tiffany, in 2001. His wife, Tiffany Rivers is a religious convert to the Roman Catholic Church. They have four daughters and two sons, and reside in Santaluz, California. On January 31, 2010, Rivers' youngest daughter Sarah Catherine was born. He had been selected to the AFC Pro Bowl team the same year but did not make it to the game in South Florida due to her birth. In an interview with NFL Network on the June 10, 2011, Rivers stated the family was expecting their sixth child. On October 11, 2011, Rivers and his family welcomed their new son Peter into the world.
Rivers is an active practicing Roman Catholic and does a great deal of work in speaking with youth about spirituality. He states that, "I feel fortunate that I have the physical and mental tools to play the game .... In turn I would like to use the popularity I have and have been given for the glory of God, to share with young people about how to be a better person - how to do things the right way." Rivers encourages youth to look to spirituality to understand that sexual intimacy should be reserved for marriage.
Rivers is a good friend of Chicago White Sox' pitcher Jake Peavy, who is also from Alabama and played for the San Diego Padres from 2002 to 2009.
Rivers' younger brother, Stephen, committed to play college football Louisiana State University (LSU) after attending Austin High School and Athens High School.
In a February 2012 interview with the National Catholic Register, Rivers noted that his patron saint is Saint Sebastian and wears a sacramental medal bearing this image, along with the Miraculous Medal and a Crucifix.
On August 16, 2012, Rivers became a televised presenter in the "Strong Men Strong Faith" Men's Conference held in Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Huntsville, Alabama. During the event, Rivers discussed his active participation in the Catholic faith in his home through various prayers and devotions which he and his wife practices. In addition, Rivers cited that he and his wife are active practitioners of Natural Family Planning.
Rivers also noted that he has a deep religious devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Blessed Virgin Mary, and emphasized that his birthday coincides with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (December 8), while his son Philip Gunner's (Jr.) birthday coincides with the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes (February 11). Furthermore, according to the conference, Rivers mentioned he and his wife Tiffany Rivers are avid penitents of the Sacrament of Confession and displays a prominent image of the Sacred Heart on their fireplace mantle.
Rivers, who grew up a fan of the Atlanta Braves, said in a 2012 interview that his favorite baseball player of all time is Chipper Jones. In the same interview, when asked who his favorite NFL quarterback of all time was, Rivers replied that it was division rival Peyton Manning.
