Death

On 29 December 2007, O'Donnell collapsed during a game against Dundee United just as he was about to be substituted. He was treated on the pitch for about five minutes by the Motherwell and Dundee United club doctors before being taken by ambulance to Wishaw General Hospital. However, he was pronounced dead at 17.18 hours. He was 35 years of age, married and had four children.

A postmortem examination was carried out on 1 January 2008 and it was revealed O'Donnell died of left ventricular failure. His funeral was on 4 January, at St Mary's church in Hamilton. He was then buried in the town's Bent cemetery only a mile away.

He was survived by his wife Eileen, and their daughters Megan and Olivia and sons Christopher and Luc, aged twelve, six, ten and four years respectively.

Famous quotes containing the word death:

    Two graves must hide thine and my corse;
    If one might, death were no divorce.
    John Donne (1572–1631)

    hung up like a pig on exhibit,
    the delicate wrists,
    the beard drooling blood and vinegar;
    hooked to your own weight,
    jolting toward death under your nameplate.
    Anne Sexton (1928–1974)

    “Promise me solemnly,” I said to her as she lay on what I believed to be her death bed, “if you find in the world beyond the grave that you can communicate with me—that there is some way in which you can make me aware of your continued existence—promise me solemnly that you will never, never avail yourself of it.” She recovered and never, never forgave me.
    Samuel Butler (1835–1902)
