Phase (waves) - Phase Shift

Phase shift is any change that occurs in the phase of one quantity, or in the phase difference between two or more quantities.

is sometimes referred to as a phase shift or phase offset, because it represents a "shift" from zero phase. But a change in is also referred to as a phase shift.

For infinitely long sinusoids, a change in is the same as a shift in time, such as a time delay. If is delayed (time-shifted) by of its cycle, it becomes:

\begin{align} x\left(t - \frac{1}{4} T\right) &= A\cdot \cos\left(2 \pi f \left(t - \frac{1}{4}T \right) + \phi \right) \\ &= A\cdot \cos\left(2 \pi f t - \frac{\pi}{2} + \phi \right)
\end{align}

whose "phase" is now . It has been shifted by radians.

Famous quotes containing the words phase and/or shift:

    I had let preadolescence creep up on me without paying much attention—and I seriously underestimated this insidious phase of child development. You hear about it, but you’re not a true believer until it jumps out at you in the shape of your own, until recently quite companionable child.
    Susan Ferraro (20th century)

    The shift from the perception of the child as innocent to the perception of the child as competent has greatly increased the demands on contemporary children for maturity, for participating in competitive sports, for early academic achievement, and for protecting themselves against adults who might do them harm. While children might be able to cope with any one of those demands taken singly, taken together they often exceed children’s adaptive capacity.
    David Elkind (20th century)
