Famous quotes containing the words wild and, wild, scenic and/or river:
“You shall see men you never heard of before, whose names you dont know,... and many other wild and noble sights before night, such as they who sit in parlors never dream of.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“We follow where the Swamp Fox guides,
His friends and merry men are we;
And when the troop of Tarleton rides,
We burrow in the cypress tree.
The turfy hammock is our bed,
Our home is in the red deers den,
Our roof, the tree-top overhead,
For we are wild and hunted men.”
—William Gilmore Simms (18061872)
“Hence from scenic bacchanal,
Preshrunk and droll prodigal!
Smallness that you had to spend,
Spent. Wench, whiskey and tail-end
Of your overseas disease
Rot and rout you by degrees.”
—Gwendolyn Brooks (b. 1917)
“It is like watching a nation busily engaged in heaping up its own funeral pyre.... As I look ahead, I am filled with foreboding. Like the Roman, I seem to see the River Tiber foaming with much blood.”
—J. Enoch Powell (b. 1912)
