Parliament of Georgia - New Parliament Building at Kutaisi

New Parliament Building At Kutaisi

On May 26, 2012, a new parliament building was inaugurated in the city of Kutaisi, 231 kilometres (144 mi) east of Tbilisi, replacing the Parliament building at 8 Rustaveli Avenue in Tbilisi.

The government, during the building's construction, promoted it as a symbol of Georgia's bright, democratic future, as its location in Kutaisi as a boost for the regional economy there as well as a way to knit the country closer together. Critics state that the building is a huge waste of money, and that having Parliament in Kutaisi, while the rest of the government remains in Tbilisi, is inefficient. The building is located on the site of a memorial to the 300,000 Georgians, as well as tens of millions of other Soviet citizens, who died in World War II; the monument was demolished with explosives in December 2009, killing two people.

The building is in the form of a 100-metre (330 ft) by 150-metre (490 ft) oval-shaped glass dome.

What is the historical function of Parliament in this country? It is to prevent the Government from governing.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)

I am not building here a statue to erect at the town crossroads, or in a church or a public square.... This is for a nook in a library, and to amuse a neighbor, a relative, a friend, who may take pleasure in associating and conversing with me.
