Self-contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
Firefighters and emergency service workers use full face masks that provide breathing air as well as eye and face protection. These masks are typically attached to a tank carried upon the back of the wearer and are called self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBA). Because oxygen breathing is hazardous in areas where fires may be burning, and because open-circuit compressed-air breathing sets are easier to refill than rebreathers, SCBA units are normally filled with compressed breathing air rather than oxygen.

Famous quotes containing the words breathing and/or apparatus:
“The cayote is a living, breathing allegory of Want. He is always hungry. He is always poor, out of luck and friendless. The meanest creatures despise him, and even the fleas would desert him for a velocipede.”
—Mark Twain [Samuel Langhorne Clemens] (18351910)
“It is part of the nature of consciousness, of how the mental apparatus works, that free reason is only a very occasional function of peoples thinking and that much of the process is made of reactions as standardized as those of the keys on a typewriter.”
—John Dos Passos (18961970)
