Overriding Aorta

An overriding aorta is a congenital heart defect where the aorta is positioned directly over a ventricular septal defect, instead of over the left ventricle.

The result is that the aorta receives some blood from the right ventricle, which reduces the amount of oxygen in the blood.

It is one of the four conditions of the Tetralogy of Fallot. The other conditions are pulmonary stenosis, RVH (right ventricular hypertrophy), and VSD (ventricular septal defect.)

Famous quotes containing the word overriding:

Too many existing classrooms for young children have this overriding goal: To get the children ready for first grade. This goal is unworthy. It is hurtful. This goal has had the most distorting impact on five-year-olds. It causes kindergartens to be merely the handmaidens of first grade.... Kindergarten teachers cannot look at their own children and plan for their present needs as five-year-olds.
