Both Shelley Long and Bette Midler were promised top billing when they signed to do the film. Neither one wanted to give up top billing to the other. So west of the Mississippi River, Long got top billing and Midler got top billing east of the Mississippi. This top billing agreement extended through the original LaserDisc release of the title, with discs shipped to retailers in the west featuring Shelly Long and retailers on the east received discs featuring Bette Midler. This was more than just packaging – the actual discs inside contained versions of the film appropriate to the billing status. By the time the film was issued to DVD in March 2000, Long takes top billing in all artwork and in the credits of the film.
Bette Midler was three months pregnant when filming began and six months pregnant when it wrapped.

Famous quotes containing the word cast:
“Sometimes, because of its immediacy, television produces a kind of electronic parable. Berlin, for instance, on the day the Wall was opened. Rostropovich was playing his cello by the Wall that no longer cast a shadow, and a million East Berliners were thronging to the West to shop with an allowance given them by West German banks! At that moment the whole world saw how materialism had lost its awesome historic power and become a shopping list.”
—John Berger (b. 1926)
“... stars that marked
those in whose faces
you had not
looked. They were cast out
as if they were
some animals, some beasts.”
—Denise Levertov (b. 1923)
“yet it seems
Life scarce can cast a fragrance on the wind,
Scarce spread a glory to the morning beams,
But the torn petals strew the garden plot;
And theres but common greenness after that.”
—William Butler Yeats (18651939)
