Remote CLI Access
Another, older, version of out-of-band management is a configuration where there is a separate network available which allows network administrators to get access to console ports of network equipment, even when these devices don't forward any traffic at that moment. If a location has several network devices, a terminal server will give access to different console ports for direct CLI access, and if there is only one device it is for some switches possible to connect a dial-in modem to an AUX port. The mentioned terminal-server can often be accessed via a separate WAN that doesn't use the managed switches and routers to connect to the central site and/or it has a modem connected via dial-in access via POTS or ISDN.

Famous quotes containing the words remote and/or access:
“To the young mind, every thing is individual, stands by itself. By and by, it finds how to join two things, and see in them one nature; then three, then three thousand; and so, tyrannized over by its own unifying instinct, it goes on tying things together, diminishing anomalies, discovering roots running underground, whereby contrary and remote things cohere, and flower out from one stem.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“The last publicized center of American writing was Manhattan. Its writers became known as the New York Intellectuals. With important connections to publishing, and universities, with access to the major book reviews, they were able to pose as the vanguard of American culture when they were so obsessed with the two JoesMcCarthy and Stalinthat they were to produce only two artists, Saul Bellow and Philip Roth, who left town.”
—Ishmael Reed (b. 1938)
