Orlando Figes - Gulag Love Story

Gulag Love Story

In 2011 Figes revealed that his next book will be a love story set in the Gulag based on 1,500 uncensored letters smuggled in and out of the Pechora labour camp from 1946, interviews with the couple, Lev and Sveta Mishchenko, who had met in the 1930s as students at the Physics Faculty of Moscow University, and the archives of the labour camp itself. According to Figes, "Lev's letters are the only major real-time record of daily life in the Gulag that has ever come to light."

Famous quotes containing the words love and/or story:

    Rebel and atheist too, why murmur I,
    As though I felt the worst that love could do?
    Love may make me leave loving, or might try
    A deeper plague, to make her love me too;
    Which, since she loves before, I’m loth to see.
    Falsehood is worse than hate; and that must be,
    If she whom I love, should love me.
    John Donne (1572–1631)

    How else is the famous short story ‘A study in Abjection’ to be understood but as an outbreak of disgust against an age indecently undermined by psychology.
    Thomas Mann (1875–1955)
