Existence and Uniqueness of Solutions
There are several theorems that establish existence and uniqueness of solutions to initial value problems involving ODEs both locally and globally. The two main theorems are
-
Theorem Assumption Conclusion Peano existence theorem F continuous local existence only Picard–Lindelöf theorem F Lipschitz continuous local existence and uniqueness
which are both local results.

Famous quotes containing the words existence and, existence, uniqueness and/or solutions:
“For it is only as an aesthetic phenomenon that existence and the world are eternally justified.”
—Friedrich Nietzsche (18441900)
“During a walk or in a book or in the middle of an embrace, suddenly I awake to a stark amazement at everything. The bare fact of existence paralyzes me... To be alive is so incredible that all I can do is to lie still and merely breathelike an infant on its back in a cot. It is impossible to be interested in anything in particular while overhead the sun shines or underneath my feet grows a single blade of grass.”
—W.N.P. Barbellion (18891919)
“Until now when we have started to talk about the uniqueness of America we have almost always ended by comparing ourselves to Europe. Toward her we have felt all the attraction and repulsions of Oedipus.”
—Daniel J. Boorstin (b. 1914)
“Those great ideas which come to you in your sleep just before you awake in morning, those solutions to the worlds problems which, in the light of day, turn out to be duds of the puniest order, couldnt they be put to some use, after all?”
—Robert Benchley (18891945)
