- People with an immune deficiency (e.g. as a result of AIDS/HIV or chemotherapy treatment).
- Women undergoing hormonal changes, like pregnancy or those on birth control pills.
- Denture users.
- Tongue piercing.
- Inflammation and whitening of the tongue can also occur due to dryness or environmental irritants such as smoking.

Famous quotes containing the words risk and/or factors:
“It is not a piece of fine feminine Spitalfields silkbut is of the horrible texture of a fabric that should be woven of ships cables & hausers. A Polar wind blows through it, & birds of prey hover over it. Warn all gentle fastidious people from so much as peeping into the bookon risk of a lumbago & sciatics.”
—Herman Melville (18191891)
“The goal of every culture is to decay through over-civilization; the factors of decadence, luxury, scepticism, weariness and superstition, are constant. The civilization of one epoch becomes the manure of the next.”
—Cyril Connolly (19031974)
