Oral Candidiasis - Risk Factors

Risk Factors

  • Newborn babies.
  • Lupus
  • Diabetics with poorly controlled diabetes.
  • As a side effect of medication, most commonly having taken antibiotics. Inhaled corticosteroids for treatment of lung conditions (e.g., asthma or COPD) may also result in oral candidiasis: the risk may be reduced by regularly rinsing the mouth with water after taking the medication.
  • People with an immune deficiency (e.g. as a result of AIDS/HIV or chemotherapy treatment).
  • Women undergoing hormonal changes, like pregnancy or those on birth control pills.
  • Denture users.
  • Tongue piercing.
  • Inflammation and whitening of the tongue can also occur due to dryness or environmental irritants such as smoking.

Famous quotes containing the words risk and/or factors:

Men’s hearts are cold. They are indifferent. Not all the coal that is dug warms the world. It remains indifferent to the lives of those who risk their life and health down in the blackness of the earth; who crawl through dark, choking crevices with only a bit of lamp on their caps to light their silent way; whose backs are bent with toil, whose very bones ache, whose happiness is sleep, and whose peace is death.
    Mother Jones (1830–1930)

I always knew I wanted to be somebody. I think that’s where it begins. People decide, “I want to be somebody. I want to make a contribution. I want to leave my mark here.” Then different factors contribute to how you will do that.
    Faith Ringgold (b. 1934)
